Alternatives to the Short Box Series
When leaning back over the short box isn't right for a client today: alternatives to round back, flat back, side to side and twist, with what to watch for.

What the exercise is for
The Short Box Series is there for trunk control sitting up. Round back and flat back work the abdominals as the client leans away from the feet; side to side and twist take the same control into side bending and rotation. The foot strap holds the legs, so the trunk does the work.
When leaning back over the box isn't right today, keep the box and shorten the lean, or take each part of the series somewhere else.
Alternatives
A smaller lean, arms crossed
ReformerSame box, same series, a shorter lever: arms folded on the chest instead of behind the head or overhead, and only as far back as the client controls.
Setup: Seated on the short box, feet under the strap, arms crossed on the chest. Lean back a short way, pause, and return. Keep the same arms for side to side and twist.
Watch for
- Pulling on the foot strap to come back up
- Losing the curve in round back and leaning back in one piece
- Chin jutting forward on the return
Round back on the roll back bar
CadillacThe round back with help: the spring supports the return, so the client keeps the curve and the abdominal work with less load.
Setup: Seated facing the roll back bar, feet against the poles, hands on the bar shoulder-width apart. Curve back as far as the client controls, and return. Start with a light spring.
Watch for
- Letting the arms do the work
- Shoulders lifting toward the ears
- Feet sliding on the poles
Mermaid
MatTakes side to side into a seated side bend, with the pelvis on the mat instead of the box.
Setup: Seated with the legs folded to one side, or cross-legged. One hand on the mat, the other arm reaching up and over into a side bend. Return and switch.
Watch for
- Opposite sit bone lifting
- Bending forward instead of to the side
- Shoulder hitching under the reaching arm
Spine Twist
MatThe twist without the box: rotation sitting tall, with the legs on the mat.
Setup: Seated tall, legs long, or crossed if that sits better. Arms out to the sides. Rotate on the exhale, return to center, and switch.
Watch for
- Turning the arms while the ribs stay put
- Leaning back as the client turns
- Hips shifting on the mat
Options, not prescriptions. Adjust them to your training, your equipment and your client.
Clients often manage some parts of the series and not others. Write down which, and next time you can go straight to the parts that work.
