What the exercise is for
Rolling Like a Ball is there for abdominal control in a curve, balance, and rolling smoothly along the spine. When the rolling itself is the problem today, the curve and the control can stay.
Alternatives
Balance point hold
MatKeeps the curve, the balance and the abdominal work, and leaves out the roll.
Setup: Seated, knees bent, hands holding the shins or behind the thighs. Tip back just behind the sit bones and lift the feet. Hold for a few breaths.
Watch for
- Collapsing through the chest to hold the position
- Shoulders lifting toward the ears
- Gripping the legs so hard the abdominals aren't needed
Half roll back
MatThe same C-curve and control through the spine, rolling only partway back and returning, with the feet on the mat throughout.
Setup: Seated, knees bent, feet flat, hands lightly behind the thighs. Curl back until the abdominals have to work, pause, and return.
Watch for
- Throwing the head forward to come back up
- Feet lifting off the mat
- Leaning back in a straight line instead of curling
A shorter roll
MatIf rolling is fine but the full roll isn't, keep the exercise and make it smaller: stop on the shoulder blades, never onto the neck.
Setup: As for Rolling Like a Ball, with a smaller roll and a well-padded mat.
Watch for
- Momentum carrying the roll onto the neck
- Head tipping back
- Feet touching down on the return
Options, not prescriptions. Adjust them to your training, your equipment and your client.
If a client's notes say rolling isn't for them, write down which of these you used. It saves the question next session.
